CMV-2 Squash

Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV-2) resistant Squash

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) occurs worldwide on cucumber and other cucurbits such as squash. CMV is a plant pathogenic RNA virus of the family Bromoviridae , from the plant virus genus Cucumovirus . This virus affects crops in both temperate and tropical climates.

Modern plant breeding has developed genetic resistances against this pest in several crops. These resistance loci when integrated in commercial varieties help in the disease management of important crop plants.

New cucurbita plants having a potent resistance locus called CMV-2 are described, together with methods for introgressing the resistance into cucurbita plants. This locus provides the crops with a high level of protection against CMV infections.
